We look forward to welcoming you to Wood Fen Lodge in the heart of Fenland’s countryside and set in four acres of beautiful grounds close to the cathedral city of Ely. We have 5 guest rooms, all of which are on the ground floor and we are able to cater for guests with limited mobility. One of these rooms is wheelchair accessible, rated level 1 and is provided with grab rails for wash basin, toilet and ‘wheel-in’ shower in the en-suite.

 

Pre arrival

We are approximately 2 miles from the villages of either Little Downham or Littleport, a drive of about 5 minutes. A train station is located in Littleport and timetables can be given on request. Buses also run from both villages. There are a number of local companies that have accessible taxis if required. We can supply contact numbers of these, should you wish to make a booking.

 

Arrival and car parking facilities

Please advise us of your anticipated arrival time, so that we can be sure that we are here to warmly welcome you.
Parking is on a slightly sloping car park with ‘drive-in’ and ‘drive-out’ gates, which are always open. Our car park has ample parking with a designated ‘disabled bay’. The car park is illuminated during the hours of darkness.
The main reception door is approximately 75cm wide and the bell is situated approximately 136cm up from the floor.

There is a slight slope just outside the main reception door.

We are happy to make arrangements with you regarding your arrival, over the phone or via email, prior to your stay.

We are able to assist with luggage if required.

 

Main entrance and reception

We are level from the car park into our tiled reception area (approx 3m x 5m).
There is adequate lighting in the main reception area, where an armchair is provided. The reception desk is approximately 115cm high. A bell is situated on top of the desk should you need our attention, this will be shown to guests on arrival. The floor is level throughout the entrance, reception and also through the corridor to the bedrooms. The main corridor is approximately 112cm wide. The main corridor also leads to our dining area.

Upon arrival guests are required to complete a registration form. Clipboards and pens are available. Guests are issued with a main door key as well as a room key. We do not have restricted opening hours; however we do ask that guests show consideration for others during their stay, in both the communal areas and within their rooms.

 

Public areas

Our dining room is also on the ground floor and is accessed via the main corridor leading from reception. The doorway entrance into the dining room is approximately 74cm wide. There are 2 armchairs which are approximately 47cm from the floor. The dining room is carpeted, (short pile carpet) and a log burner is used in cold weather. Our dining tables are approximately 75cm high and 75cm wide. We have a table suitable for wheelchair users, the wheelchair can be wheeled right up to the table itself, which is 71cm high. Our dining chairs are without arms. A child’s highchair is also available.

Our adjoining ‘Baize Bar’ area also has an armchair and a sofa both of which are approximately 50cm high. There is a small coffee table in the centre, which we are happy to move to enable easier access if needed. This area is also short-pile carpet. Our breakfast menu can be printed in larger print if requested and we are happy to discuss your breakfast requirements. We have a sideboard along one wall which has cereal, coffee and juice jugs, which is self service, but can be served on request. Tables can be joined together for larger parties.

 

Public toilets

The public toilet is situated in the main corridor leading off from reception. This facility is unisex. The approximate size of this facility is 224cm x 77cm. The doorway opens inwards and is approximately 73cm wide. The floor area is tiled.
There is also a small hand basin with towel rail. There are no ‘grab rails’ in this WC.

 

Laundry

Laundry services are not available on the premises, but there is a launderette in the village of Littleport, which is approx 5 minutes drive and has limited parking bays outside.

Shops

There is a local shop/s in both the villages of Little Downham and Littleport, both of which are an approximate 5 minute drive away. A wider choice of shops are available in the nearby town of Ely, which is approximately 10 minutes drive with several car parks, all having limited number of disabled bays.

 

Leisure facilities

The village of Littleport has a leisure centre (no swimming pool), and the nearby town of Ely also has its own leisure centre with swimming pool.

Bedrooms

All 5 bedrooms are on the ground floor, and all are along the main corridor from reception. All bedrooms have been recently decorated.

We have 2 double bedrooms and 3 twin bedrooms, and 4 of these rooms are en-suite, all with showers (the step into the shower is approx 7cm) The other twin room has a private bathroom which is approx 19 feet from the room itself. This is also with a shower.

One of our twin rooms has a ‘level 1’ disabled rating. The doorway to this room is 81cm wide and the room itself is 3.35m x 3.96m. The entrance to the en-suite is 81cm wide and the en-suite itself is 2.28m x 1.75m. It has a wheel –in shower area with grab rails at the sink, lavatory as well as in the shower itself. The shower also has a wall mounted seat which is approx 42cm high.

There is a bell in both the en-suite and the main room. There is a desk/dressing table which is approx 70cm high. This room has short pile carpet and tiled flooring in the en-suite.

Tea and coffee trays are provided in all the rooms, along with Televisions, hairdryers and clock radios.
The rooms have individual electric heaters, which can be set at the desired setting.
Rooms are serviced daily on request.

We have a folder in each room, which provides additional information about the guest house and details of emergency contacts.

Evacuation procedures are noted in each room.

Each room has storage space consisting of a wardrobe, drawers and bedside cabinets. Average bed height is 56cm; average width of doorways is 70cm. Average WC height is 42cm and average basin height is 85cm.

 

Grounds and gardens

Outside the dining room, we have a decked terrace area with plenty of seating. Decking leads from the main garden area towards our smallholding. Guests are welcome to wander around and have a look at our pigs and chickens, although the decking doesn’t cover the whole area and the ground can be uneven.

Access to the garden area is via the dining room. The doorway from the dining room into the garden is approx 64cm wide and has a small step of approx 7cm on the inside, and 20cm on the outside.

The decking from here is approx 97cmwide and is slightly sloping.

 

Additional information

There is a fire extinguisher in the main reception area. In the event of a fire, an alarm will sound. Please inform us upon arrival if you have a hearing impediment and might not hear this. The guest house is completely non smoking but guests are welcome to smoke outside- please request an ashtray.

We are happy to refrigerate any medication provided it is clearly marked.

We are happy to cater for any particular likes or dislikes, but please inform us of these before your arrival.
Mobile phone reception here is generally good.

Free wi-fi is available in all guest rooms.

We also have a selection of local tourist attractions/information displayed in our main reception.

We also have a hair studio, beauty room and spa area, with a Grecian style Thermae Spa and hot tub, details of these can be found on our website and inside the guest folder in each room. The hair studio and beauty room are both on the ground floor and the doorways are 70cm for the beauty room and 99cm for the hair studio.

The spa area is situated outside from the decking area.
